How to Repair and Recover Data from Damaged CDs or DVDs

Beyond any doubt, many people still prefer watching or listening to songs in an old-fashioned way, i.e, via CDs or DVDs. But with time, these items have lost their significance to USBs and external hard discs. With continuous use of CDs or DVDs, it tends to get scratches, which makes it hard to read in the player and computer. And a scratched storage media item could mean lousy news i.e, data loss.

However, there are lots of data recovery software available in the market, which users can use to resolve the problem. Also, if you are looking for methods, then you can reclaim your data by checking the below-listed solutions.

  • Flip the disc to mark them with a marker if any holes or scratches present.
  • Now take masking tape and stick the small strips on the upper side CD/DVD.
Note: Tape will make the CD a little bit noisy while running. But it will help to access 80% of your data conveniently.

  • First of all, you need to apply Vaseline, lip balm, or any wax on the shiny side of the CD/DVD.
  • After that, wait for a few minutes and allow it to dry.
  • Now take a soft and clean lint-free cloth to wipe off the wax in a radial motion.
  • Lastly, test the disc. If it works, immediately recover your data as this is a temporary solution.
Clean the disc Method:
  • To remove dust particles, use warm water to wash the disc.
  • See if any dirt accumulated on the shiny side, and then gently rub it while washing.
  • You can also use liquid soap, mild detergent, or alcohol to clean it more effectively.
  • Avoid using cloth or towel. Shake to drip off the water and let it dry.
  • At last, test the disc and reclaim data if it works then good; otherwise, move on to the next method to repair it.
Polishing Method:
  • Apply a small amount of gel or toothpaste to remove scratches.
  • Clean it with a soft lint-free cloth on the scratch in a radial motion.
  • Make sure to do it more than 10-12 times as necessary.
Note: try not to apply too much pressure while rubbing it.
  • In the end, test the drive to copy the content.
