How to Get Pokérus in Pokémon Sword and Shield (and Why is it Important)

Pokérus is simply a wordplay on Pokémon and virus, and although it is a type of virus, gamers seek to get their Pokémon infected with it. The virus was first seen within the second generation of the Pokémon franchise and has been in the series ever since.

In case you are not living under the rock, you must have heard about Pokémon Sword and Shield, the latest addition to the Pokémon gaming franchise. The game has been making headlines ever since its release, and it has not been all good. Even though the game has had its fair share of controversy, it still managed to become the most successful Pokémon game ever.

Now coming back to Pokérus, the virus acts as a booster to the Pokémon and provides Effort Values. There are some rules regarding the Pokérus, you must know.
After getting healed, it will not spread from your one Pokémon to others.
When one infected Pokémon is cured, it cannot get infected again.

Why Infect Pokémon with Pokérus

Despite being a virus, Pokérus has its benefits. They are:
It can enhance Pokémon stats.
Provides double efforts during battling.
Offers double efforts even after battling.

How to Get Pokérus?

The chances of your Pokémon getting the virus randomly is pretty low, but you can get them infected by a trade. If we talk in numbers, then the chance of your Pokémon getting the virus after a battle is 1/22,000. The chances are even three times rarer than catching a Shiny Pokémon, so you are suggested to follow the tips we provide.
Trainers can try adding an infected Pokémon in their team to increase their chances of getting infected.
Your Pokémon can get infected after a battle, and if you trade your infected Pokémon with someone else, then their Pokémon can get infected as well.
If you have friends in Pokémon Sword and Shield, then you can trade the infected with them and breed them in the Nursery.

How to Cure Pokérus?

As the virus is not status-based, you cannot cure it in the Pokémon Center or with items. Like any other virus, Pokérus goes out on its own in time. Pokérus will get cured in four days, and once cured, the Pokémon cannot catch it again.

The infected Pokémon will start the curing process on its own after a day changes in Switch, meaning if the game is switched off one day and reopened the other day, the Pokémon would be cured.

How to know my Pokémon has Pokérus?

Telling if a Pokémon has Pokérus is simple, and you can do so as well after following the given steps:
Click X to launch the menu.
Choose the Pokémon option.
Click R and reach the boxes.
Move over the Pokémon in the party.
In case the Pokémon is infected, then it would present a pink face alongside an X over it. It will be visible in the box where the type is shown.
Click A to get more information.
Now reach Check Summary.

Note: In case the Pokémon is infected, you can see Pokérus flashing beside the marking options.

How to Prevent Pokémon from getting Cured?

Preventing your Pokémon from getting cured has its benefits, and if you wish to do so, then it is possible as well. If the infected Pokémon is kept within the box, then Pokérus is put under an infinite stasis. So trainers can keep the infected Pokémon in the box, and bring it out to infect other Pokémon. Keep in mind that even if your Pokémon is cured, it still earns double Effort Values. It merely stops being contagious, that is all.
